SEMI recently held a seminar on “2012 Strategic Operations – New LED Opportunities”, and invited experts from TSMC Solid State Lighting, Edison Optoelectronics, and ITRI to analyze the challenges and new opportunities of the LED industry in Taiwan.
After the challenging 2011, the LED industry has gradually increased the penetration rate of LED-backlit TVs and lighting, and finally let the operators see new opportunities for growth. Although the long-term outlook of the LED market is still optimistic, according to statistics, the European LED lighting market will have a compound growth rate of 38% in the next five years, and China's 12th Five-Year Plan is expected to drive the total output value of LED lighting to 70 billion yuan. Cao Selun, president of SEMI Taiwan and Southeast Asia, said that in 2011, Taiwan's LED output value reached 4.5 billion US dollars, and this year it can see 200 billion Taiwan dollars. Driven by the demand for the 12th Five-Year Plan, lighting, and TV backlighting, Taiwan's LED industry with more than 200 manufacturers' complete industrial chains should be ready to meet the next stage of development opportunities.
Zhu Mudao, head of the Optoelectronics and Systems Application Group at ITRI Institute of Electronics and Optoelectronics, ITRI, said that the efficiency of LEDs has exceeded 100 lm/W, which will accelerate the take-off of the lighting market. It is estimated that LED lighting has an opportunity to account for about 30% of the global lighting market in 2015, and the cost of LED light source and lighting is the key to LED popularization. Although Taiwan has a complete LED manufacturing industry chain, he believes that there is still room for improvement in product development and estuary layout for lighting applications. However, Taiwanese manufacturers' product efficiency is not the first in the world, but it can provide the best cost-effective products, which is a major advantage for domestic players.
Zhu Mudao introduced a number of innovative technologies in development, including 8-inch GaN-on-Si, μ-LED integrated photoelectric technology, bulb lamp, thin film LED package, UV LED, intelligent human lighting, agricultural and livestock animal husbandry LED lighting Etc., and pointed out that the industry should create higher LED market value through these cost-effective LED lighting technology and high-end application technology.
Wang Zhilin, deputy director of TSMC's SSL lighting component technology integration project, is using different indicators such as lm/W and lm/$ to illustrate different applications of LED locks of different power levels. He said that with regard to the current technological development of LEDs, this will not be a major problem as efficiency has increased significantly in recent years. In the future, the quality requirements will be higher and higher, including color, reliability, and service life. It will be an important key for the industry to bring differentiated features to lighting.
Edison Optoelectronics helped Chen Jianming to introduce the current status and future of China's lighting industry. He said that the Chinese government's policy support and subsidies have enabled China's LED industry to develop rapidly in recent years and have fostered the growth of companies such as Qinshang, Sunshine and NVC. Although the LED government standard for the 12th Five-Year Plan has already begun, it is not easy for Taiwanese companies to enter. Moreover, mainland manufacturers have seized the market with very low prices, rapid proofing and delivery, and quality and other strategies, which have indeed brought great threats to Taiwanese operators. At present, Edison mainly focuses on customized services and provides integrated services for LED design and manufacturing. He said that if it is impossible to compete by price and specifications, it will turn to service to win. At the same time, he suggested that Taiwanese companies must develop new and innovative applications and get out of their own strategies and directions in order to win in the competition.
