Products using Samsung's 28GHz millimeter-wave RF chip are released in early 2018

Samsung Electronics officially announced that the company's 28GHz millimeter-wave RF chip designed for 5G infrastructure has been developed and is ready for commercialization. The 5G device using the chip will be officially released in early 2018.

Kyungwhoon Cheun, executive vice president and next-generation communications business director of Samsung Electronics, said that the company has spent several years researching related basic technologies in order to complete the 28GHz 5G RF chip. Now that the chip is in the commercialization stage, it symbolizes that past efforts have finally come together to complete the results, and it is also a major milestone in the commercialization of 5G. The chip will play a very important role in the upcoming networking technology revolution.

Samsung has released some details of the new RF chip in a 5G mobile technology seminar hosted by the Korean InsTItute of CommunicaTIons and InformanTIon Science, and provided details of the company's 5G product commercialization schedule. During the upcoming World Mobile Communications Conference (MWC), Samsung will also announce more details. According to Samsung's plan, the 5G base station equipped with this RF chip will be officially released in early 2018.

Samsung said that the new 5G RF chip will greatly enhance the overall performance of the 5G base station, especially in terms of cost reduction, efficiency and equipment size. The high-gain/high-efficiency power amplifier (PA) paired with the new RF chip was also developed by Samsung itself. The PA was officially released in July 2016. This combination means that the RF chip will support the millimeter wave band. Samsung announced a few years ago that the company's research and development focus on millimeter wave technology will be placed in the 28GHz band.

In addition to the matching PA, Samsung also revealed that the RF chip will be paired with a set of antenna arrays consisting of 16 low-loss antennas. Such a configuration will further enhance its communication efficiency and performance.

Due to the relatively high thresholds and obstacles of the millimeter wave technology, most of the 5G networks that have entered the test or small-scale deployment on the market currently operate in the frequency band below 6 GHz. However, 28GHz will be the first major goal in the development of 5G communication to millimeter wave communication.

After the RF chip entered the commercialization stage, Samsung has successfully overcome the most challenging technical difficulties in the 28GHz millimeter wave signal chain, and the commercialization of related equipment is expected to accelerate.
