[TechWeb reported] June 10 news, according to the US media, Microsoft has deployed a data center underwater. The purpose of this project is to study the use of renewable energy to provide Internet services to coastal cities and increase the feasibility of speeding up the Internet. In addition to making money, this move can also be powered by renewable energy, which can serve two purposes.

The data center is located 36 meters below the surface of the sea and is powered by the submarine cable operated by Orkney. This project is part of the Project Natick project. Microsoft deployed the data center in the waters near the Orkney Islands in Scotland. The project's data center consists of 864 servers that are housed within a 40-foot-long waterproof container.

The logic of this project is very clear: to make the data center closer to the user benefits, reduce the distance between the user and the server, so that the user's network conditions are more smooth. Microsoft said that half of the world’s population currently lives in less than 150 kilometers from the ocean, and that the ocean stays below a certain depth, keeping the data center on the ocean floor, which can save a large part of the cooling cost from the budget.

The current goal of the Project Natick project is to deploy large-scale data centers in most parts of the world within 90 days. This deployment is expected to take only one to two years to complete. However, as the Internet gains popularity in more and more places in the world, it may accelerate the progress of the project and may shorten the completion time.

For Microsoft, the deployment of the underwater server project is an exploratory experiment to prove that it is possible to deploy servers below the surface of the sea to expand the feasibility of commercial server scale.
