In 2014, Qualcomm introduced the Halo vehicle wireless charging system in the first Formula E. The Halo wireless charging system consists of four parts: a power supply unit, a charging pad, a car receiver board, and a vehicle controller. The basic principle of this technology is similar to the charging method of mobile devices used by most people today. The magnetic resonance effect is used to realize the energy transmission between the ground charging board and the electric vehicle charging board, thereby implementing the power battery pack of the electric or hybrid vehicle. The owner only needs to park the vehicle above the charging pad to achieve charging. The Halo wireless charging system can achieve 90% charging efficiency, exceeding the cable charging efficiency. The charging system can be up to 20 kW, and the battery pack of the 85 kWh Tesla MODEL S P85 takes about 5 hours.

Aberle said that Halo wireless charging (static wireless charging technology) will be applied to cars in the next two to three years. Qualcomm is working with car manufacturer DaimlerChrysler to install a new generation of static wireless charging systems for cars.

Dynamic wireless charging technology is an advanced version of Halo wireless charging. Qualcomm said it plans to bury the wireless charging transmitter under the road in the future, and the electric vehicle can drive and charge on these road sections. However, this kind of wireless charging of a moving car requires modification of the road infrastructure, which takes time and costs.
