The robot is thinner than human hair and has a small tubular shape. The robot is made of three layers of material: the outermost layer of graphene oxide can adsorb lead ions from contaminated water, and the middle layer is nickel, allowing external passage. The controlled magnetic field is used to control the robot, and the innermost layer is platinum, which can form propulsion by decomposing hydrogen peroxide. Related papers have been published in the journal Nanocommunication. The paper states that after applying nano-robots, the water with a lead concentration of 1000 ppb can be purified to a concentration of 50 ppb in 60 minutes, and the adsorption rate is as high as 95%. Since these robots can be controlled with a controlled magnetic field, these robots can be recycled and reused, and even the adsorbed lead ions can be recycled.
Samuel Sánchez, co-author of the Max Planck Institute in Germany, told Phys.org "This is a new application of nano-robots for environmental science.
