TI's latest 450V linear controller simplifies offline LED lighting design

Beijing, October 14, 2014. Texas Instruments (TI) today announced a 450V linear controller that simplifies current regulation of high voltage LED strings. The TPS92410 controller's highly integrated multiplier, adjustable phase dimmer detection, and analog dimming input and driver circuit protection simplify spotlight and luminaire design with off-line AC or common DC power.

The TPS92410 operates from a wide input voltage range of 9.5V to 450V and can be used as a stand-alone high voltage LED string current regulator or paired with the TI TPS92411 float switch and powers AC linear direct drive power applications. The TPS92410, in combination with the TPS92411, provides driver and LED circuit protection while providing a low-inductance, low-LED current ripple lighting solution. The TPS92410 includes an analog dimming input pin that supports LED shutdown for easy light intensity control in MCU-based smart fixtures using the ultra-low-power MSP430F5172 microcontroller or the SimpleLinkTM ZigBee® CC2530 wireless MCU.

Key features and benefits of the TPS92410

· AC and DC applications

o Undervoltage lockout, MOSFET overvoltage protection, and thermal return prevent drive and LED damage under fault conditions

· AC application of TPS92411

o Compatible with legacy TRIAC and reverse phase dimmers in AC powered LED lighting applications;

o On-chip internal multipliers produce very high power factor corrections over 0.95 with line regulation errors of +/- 3%.

About TI Floating Switch Architecture

TI's award-winning floating switch architecture achieves low ripple for LED current, comparable to a Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) design. The TPS92410 and TPS92411 eliminate the need for inductive components for power transfer, eliminating cost and size concerns and simplifying design.

Availability and packaging

The TPS92410 is available in volume production in a 13-lead SOIC package and can be ordered through TI and its authorized distributors.

Tools and support

· The 120V TPS92410EVM-001 and 230V TPS92410EVM-002 Light Engine Evaluation Boards are available now;

· Download the 120V or 230V TPS92410 Design Calculator tool for help with selecting external components;

· Predict LED current ripple using the TPS92410 PSPICE transient model.
