Spansion launches new automotive microcontroller family

Beijing, China, May 21, 2014 – Spansion, Inc. (NYSE: CODE) , a global leader in embedded market flash memory solutions, today announced the launch of a new family of microcontrollers for the automotive applications market. Based on the ARM Cortex®-R5 core, the Spansion® TraveoTM family of microcontrollers is available for a wide range of applications including electrification, body electronics, battery management, automotive dashboards, heating and ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Automotive applications provide high performance, advanced human interface, high security and advanced network system protocols.

The new product family combines Spansion's deep technical heritage in automotive system construction to enable scalable and efficient design of high performance and safety automotive applications, with advanced in-vehicle technology to improve driver safety and user experience.

Mr. Takeshi Fuse, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Spansion Automotive MCU Division, said: "The Spansion Traveo product family strengthens our position as the industry's leading MCU supplier for automotive and industrial applications. The MCU product family will be tailored to the application. System solutions that make design and integration processes for software and hardware easier, creating top-level security and performance."

The Spansion Traveo family's first product line, the MB9D560, is based on a dual-core ARM® Cortex-R5 core with embedded 2MB of flash memory running at 200 MHz. The Spansion Traveo family of microcontrollers extends Spansion's portfolio of automotive electrification products for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and electric vehicles (EV). The dual-core architecture on a single chip has two interface circuits for resolver-sensors in motor control, as well as two unique hardware IPs. Each core has a built-in floating point unit (FPU) that can operate at 1.66 DMIPS/MHz. Each motor operates independently but monitors each other. The memory protection unit, error correction code (ECC), parity error detection and correction functions ensure system reliability.

Assisting industry

“The ARM architecture meets the low power and performance needs unique to the automotive market,” said Richard York, vice president of product marketing for ARM's CPU division. “Spansion's new Traveo microcontroller portfolio is a great example of fast, real-time, accurate Microcontrollers can broaden the new applications of our architecture in the automotive sector and transform the driving experience."

Chris Webber, vice president of global automotive research at Strategy AnalyTIcs, said: "System designers are constantly pursuing superior MCU performance and more efficient power efficiency. The new MCU family based on ARM Cortex-R5 is essential for Spansion to enhance vehicle capabilities. Important, at the same time, the new product's ability to integrate multiple features on a single chip is also cost effective."
