Public cloud storage solution: what data to migrate

Using object storage and commercial hardware is a way to get into cloud computing services, but it's not the best way. Object storage will make a lot of sense when it comes to supporting the storage needs of new, cloud-based applications that are written according to the RESTful API (RESTful API). For today's applications, customers often prefer to pursue other methods, such as leveraging public cloud storage services, cloud storage gateways, and third-party products that work closely with one or more public clouds.

So, how do you determine which workloads and use cases are suitable for public cloud storage? Cloud computing may seem attractive from a cost and scalability perspective, but cloud computing can better match specific types of workloads and storage use cases than other scenarios.

Let us first understand a little background. Since the Taneja Group first proposed a public cloud storage solution for enterprise customers in 2008, this solution has been greatly developed. Although Amazon is still the leader in this area, today's customers have more choices for vendors and storage solutions to pursue the best value for money. Continuous innovation and escalating competition make cloud storage solutions more attractive than ever.

Today's mainstream public cloud vendors serving the enterprise market tend to offer three basic storage services: block storage services for tightly coupled cloud platforms (eg, Amazon's Elastic Block Storage [EBS] service, HP Cloud Storage Service, Windows Azure binary block) Storage services); stand-alone object storage services (for example, Amazon Simple Storage Service, HP Cloud Object Storage Service, Windows Azure Binary Storage Service); content delivery network services (such as Amazon CloudFront, HP Cloud CDN, Windows Azure CDN). The object storage scheme is the main point of interest when developers write cloud applications based on the next-generation framework, while the block storage scheme is mainly to meet the old storage requirements of current applications.

At the same time, public cloud storage vendors typically provide additional storage-related services to meet specific use case requirements, such as relational and non-relational database applications, database synchronization, long-term archive storage (such as Amazon Glacier), and cloud storage gateways (such as AWS). Storage or Microsoft StorSimple Cloud Integration Enterprise Storage). There are also a range of third-party cloud backup products to choose from.

In this context, workloads and storage use cases that are best suited for the cloud environment will be heavily dominated by application and service level requirements. This is useful from a planning and evaluation perspective, which can define your storage needs based on two key dimensions: the value/sensitivity of the data, and the nature of the storage use cases and workloads.

In short, the greater the value/sensitivity of the data, the higher the need for security and compliance. Although the security of public clouds has steadily increased, this does not address the storage requirements for highly regulated data that must meet stringent security, privacy, and/or other compliance standards. Information such as sensitive medical and financial information is subject to industry regulations such as the US Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard. Many types of federal and state government data are also in this controlled directory. If your data cannot withstand even the slightest security threat, unauthorized access, or data loss, then you can't exist in the public cloud.

Public cloud storage applications often fail to meet the performance levels and availability required for production applications, so vendors are reluctant to include any liability beyond their minimum availability in their service level terms (and without any performance guarantees). For example, AWS guarantees that its flexible computing cloud, elastic block storage [EBS] infrastructure has 99.95% availability (that is equivalent to 21 minutes per month), but even if the customer's workload is down, such guarantees are still available. Satisfied, because the definition of availability is that at least one instance can respond to external connections while at least one mounted disk volume can read, write, and input.

The best application area for public cloud storage is data value/sensitivity is very low, and focus on the domain of two or three-tier use cases, such as development / testing, backup, disaster recovery, archiving and so on. In the above scenario, public cloud storage provides an ideal solution because storage performance, availability, and security requirements are relatively relaxed. Still, customers can take advantage of the tremendous scalability and compelling costs of cloud computing.
