LCD TV sales in the United States are the first annual decline in manufacturers abandoned low price strategy

Research firm iSuppli recently pointed out that due to the worrisome economic situation and the slowdown in prices during most of the year, it is expected that LCD TV sales in the United States will be lower than last year in 2010, setting a record of first-year decline.

iSuppli expects shipments of LCD TVs in the United States to reach 31.9 million units in 2010, a decrease of 1.2% from the 32.3 million units in 2009. Since 2006, US LCD TV shipments have been increasing year by year. Regardless of whether the economic situation is good or bad, U.S. consumers can always find ways to use more disposable income to buy slim new LCD TVs. However, the economic reality in 2010 finally hit the LCD market, causing sales to decline for the first time at the end of the year. Nevertheless, with the renewed consumer confidence, shipments will resume growth in 2011.

iSuppli pointed out that although the economic situation in 2010 has improved from 2009, due to the high unemployment rate, US consumer confidence is still weak. At the same time, LCD TV prices did not decline at the usual pace in 2010. Since most consumers have purchased flat-panel TVs in previous years, economic uncertainty and lack of concessions have led to a decline in shipments. Taking into account the historical trend of the LCD TV market, consumers are increasingly expected that prices will continue to decline significantly in 2010. However, due to insufficient supply in the first three quarters, prices have not dropped enough to stimulate consumers' willingness to buy.

In addition, consumer electronics manufacturers no longer regard price reduction as an important means of promotion. In 2010, LCD TV manufacturers changed their strategies and gradually abandoned the traditional means of price reduction. Instead, they adopted value-added strategies, launched TVs with more advanced features, and maintained pricing capabilities. These features include LED backlighting, built-in internet access, and 3D display. iSuppli Corporation predicts that in the next few years in 2011, the United States will resume its growth in LCD TV shipments. The increase in consumer confidence in the coming years will boost consumer electronics sales, especially television sales.

iSuppli said that although LCD TV shipments in the United States will decline in 2010, the global LCD TV market will continue to expand this year, an increase of 20.3%. Driven by emerging markets such as China, Asia Pacific and parts of Latin America, the global LCD TV market continues to grow. As LCD TV prices become more affordable, TV sales in these regions have grown strongly.
