Facebook, Amazon, Google Alphabet, IBM, and Microsoft spontaneously gathered to announce a new artificial intelligence (AI) partnership designed to conduct research and promote best practices.
This means that high-tech companies will often come together to discuss the progress of artificial intelligence. They will also formally establish a system to achieve communication between companies. It is worth noting that in daily work, these teams will continue to compete and use machine intelligence to develop the best products and services.
Initial financial support will come from their respective member companies, but in the future, more companies and institutions will join. User organizations, non-profit organizations, ethicists and other stakeholders will join the discussion in the coming weeks.
“We also want people involved in AI to get involved,†said Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder and head of the artificial intelligence application division of Alphabet's subsidiary DeepMind.
The design of the new organization will allow non-corporate groups to go hand in hand with large high-tech companies with equal leadership.
As of today, companies such as Apple, Twitter, Intel and Baidu have not joined. Although Apple is enthusiastic about the project, their absence is still eye-catching. If many of its competitors are part of a new organization, Apple will undoubtedly lag behind in artificial intelligence.
The new organization seems to really want to promote the transformation of AI in society through practice, and from time to time. They use a standard open license to publish research topics including ethics, inclusiveness and privacy. And ethical issues are the focus of the public.
As a countermeasure, Microsoft and other companies have established an artificial intelligence ethics advisory committee. However, the new AI Alliance will not overturn the results of each company, but will provide a forum to share valuable opinions.
