AC induction motor overview

AC induction motors (ACIM) are the most popular motors in consumer electronics and industrial applications. The motor is highly reliable, simple in design, has no brush, so there is no wear and is extremely inexpensive to manufacture. Another important feature is that the rotor does not create any moving contact and therefore does not create a spark. However, ACIM is less efficient than other motor types.

The ACIM speed depends on the frequency of the AC input voltage and the number of poles in the stator winding. AC induction motors are available in single and three phase versions; three phase is ideal for variable speed applications.

microprocessor

TI's Stellaris® C2000TM and Hercules® microprocessor (MCU) series are ideal for controlling AC induction motors. All of these MCU families can be used to implement scalar or vector control techniques.

The C2000MCU is ideal for real-time operation and features a high-resolution pulse width modulator (PWM) for precise control of the gate driver. The dual sample-and-hold, 12-bit, high-speed analog-to-digital converter (ADC) provides high-precision sampling of any sensor input.

The combination of high performance PWM and ADC ensures low torque ripple and efficient motor control. The powerful C2000MCU core architecture quickly executes mathematical algorithms and controls the motor through vector control.

The Stellaris MCU is based on the widely used ARMCortex M3 core and has all the integrated onboard peripherals associated with motor control. The Stellaris MCU features a 10-bit ADC and motor control-specific PWM to provide efficient control of the motor. Onboard communication peripherals such as USB and Ethernet enable the MCU to act as a networked controller and can also perform motor control.

The Hercules Safety MCU is based on the widely used ARMCortexR4 core and is designed to simplify the development and certification of safety-critical systems. The Hercules MCU has up to two 12-bit ADCs. The flexible HET coprocessor features motor-specific PWM for efficient motor control. Onboard communication peripherals (for example, enabling the MCU as USB, Ethernet, and CAN for a secure networking controller that can simultaneously perform secure motor control).

isolation

TI's digital isolators feature logic input and output buffers that are isolated by TI's silicon dioxide (SiO2) isolation barrier to provide 4kV isolation. When used with an isolated power supply, these devices block high voltages, isolate ground, and prevent noise currents from entering the local ground and interfering with or damaging sensitive circuitry.

Interface/connection

Traditional analog RS-232/RS-485 interfaces have always been a common choice for motor control applications. Looking ahead, designers will integrate mainstream interfaces such as Ethernet, USB and CAN into their products.

TI is committed to providing solutions for both traditional and emerging industrial interfaces. For example, TI recently introduced the world's first isolated CAN transceiver ISO1050.
