Softbank said that their self-driving buses, which SB Drive Group is developing, can reduce bus operating expenses by half, starting as early as 2019. Unlike automatic driving cars, automatic driving buses have a fixed route, so there is no need to constantly monitor and analyze new and unknown road conditions, and the level of machine intelligence is low.
In April this year, Softbank and ASM (Advanced Smart Mobility) established the SB Drive Group. ASM is a self-driving R&D company founded by a former Toyota auto engineer. Softbank has invested 500 billion yen this year, accounting for 40% of the shares. Through its own high-speed communications technology, Softbank cooperates with ASM's automated driving technology team to develop core technologies such as obstacle perception, acceleration and deceleration, and steering wheel manipulation. At present, the test vehicle of SB Drive has already been driven on a closed road, and it will officially start testing the city's field road next year. In a recent test, the CEO of SB Drive Group personally boarded the test vehicle and completed a 30-minute test.
In addition to Softbank, there are now several companies involved in self-driving buses. Mercedes Future Bus has begun long-distance testing, in addition they also invested 200 million euros to create a city bus system, so that buses into the city network, and the traffic lights and other urban infrastructure information to open up each other; France EasyMile has developed A bus capable of carrying 15 people Arma; domestic Yutong Group also successfully completed the test of automatic driving intercity bus last year, the test section of a total length of 32.6 kilometers.
