On October 31, 2007, Toyota Japan (Toyoda Gosei) and Germany's Osram signed an agreement to use certain LED technologies and laser technologies. This collaboration involves the semiconductor laser and the foundation of blue, white and green LEDs - InGaN technology. The OSRAM side focuses on the basic technologies for LED and semiconductor laser industrial production, while Toyota Synthetic (the world's first development of blue LEDs in 1991) has a technical knowledge of protected blue LEDs.
The agreement will make it easier for both parties to develop and sell new products without fear of unintentional patent infringement. Most importantly, both parties are looking for a rapid, significant performance boost in LED light intensity.
OSRAM Opto said that signing an agreement with Toyota Synthetic is good for both the market and customers, and is an excellent example of respecting and protecting the intellectual property of other companies. The cooperation between the two parties will contribute to the promotion of LED technology and enable the emerging LED market to develop healthily under the principle of fair competition.
This agreement is another proof of the vitality of OSRAM's patent policy. While fully defending the patent rights, OSRAM has reached a number of licensing agreements with other companies.
