Altera Corporation today announced the availability of the Stratix® II GX Edition Audio/Video Development Kit, the industry's first FPGA-based audio/video development kit that supports triple-rate SDI (serial digital interface), including the latest 3Gbps SMPTE 424M standard.The development kit supports the 424M standard defined by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) to help designers develop next-generation studio and broadcast applications such as video matrix, H.264 encoders, pattern converters and HD-based (high definition) Integrated Receiver Decoder (IRD), etc. in 1080p format.

The current support for the HD 1080p format is a dual-link connection (SMPTE 372) from camera to mixing and recording equipment. The number of cables required for a dual-link connection is double that of a single link, which increases the complexity of the presentation device and increases the cost. The SMPTE 424M is a single-link 1080p standard that simplifies hardware design and reduces equipment installation and cost.
The Stratix II GX Audio/Video Development Kit provides a variety of inputs and outputs for the standard, including asynchronous serial interface (ASI), SDI, digital video interface (DVI) and other audio interfaces. The kit also supports Altera's video and image processing technology, which designers can implement in a single FPGA or as a coprocessor supporting a digital signal processor. The Stratix II GX's 20 full-duplex transceiver channels operate over a data rate range of 270Mbps to 3Gbps and support SDI, HD-SDI, and 3-Gbps SDI serial data rates. The transceiver's maximum data rate is up to 6.375Gbps. The low-power transceivers embedded in the Stratix II GX provide excellent jitter performance and can be of great help to designers.
