To illustrate the oled structure, we can make a simple metaphor: Each oled unit is like a hamburger, and the luminous material is the sandwiched vegetables. Each oled display unit can controllably generate three different colors of light. Like lcd, oled also has active and passive points. Cells selected by row and column addresses in the passive mode are lit. In the active mode, there is a thin film transistor (tft) behind the oled cell, and the light emitting cell is lighted by tft. Active oled is more power efficient, but passive oled shows better performance.

Compared with lcd, oled will find many advantages. Oled can emit light by itself, while lcd does not emit light. So oled is much brighter than lcd, with a high contrast ratio and a good color effect. Oled does not have a limited range of viewing angles. The viewing angle can generally reach 160 degrees, so that it will not be distorted from the side. Lcd requires the background light to be lit, oled only need to light the unit to power up, and the voltage is lower, so more power. The weight of oled is also much lighter than lcd. The oled requires little material and the manufacturing process is simple. The cost of mass production is 20% less than the lcd. However, the main disadvantage of oled is that the life expectancy is shorter than that of LCD. At present, it can only reach 5000 hours, while lcd can reach 10,000 hours.
