Demand for automotive safety soars, global manufacturers work hard to develop image-based ADAS

In order to build a new generation of smart cars, global automakers have competed to develop ADAS and voice control functions, driving a large number of automotive electronics needs, including high-definition image sensors, multi-core MCU / DSP, radar and in-vehicle network communication chips, and voice control platforms , Have become the development focus of component suppliers.

The 2012 Auto Shows in Hanover, Germany, Detroit, Taipei, and Beijing have all come to an end. From this, we can find that brand car manufacturers no longer pursue engine horsepower or interior comfort, but instead optimise the driving experience. Smart Car), and put forward a variety of innovative design concepts to fight for beauty.

Among them, the design of the Active Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and Telematics (TelemaTIcs) platforms is the hottest, and has become the unanimous goal of global automakers. Including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Audi and Toyota, and even in mainland China car manufacturers, all have deployed products. Although ADAS currently only appears in high-end models, as the technology matures and newer system design solutions reduce costs, it will quickly spread to mid- to low-priced models.

Optimized image type ADAS high-definition lens / DSP soared

Global car manufacturers are working hard to develop image-based ADAS, including parking assistance (PA), lane deviation warning (LDW) and blind spot detection (BSD) are the layout priorities (Figure 1); in order to improve the accuracy of image system judgment, related car manufacturers It has been planned to introduce high-definition (HD) lenses for vehicles, which will bring a wave of market opportunities to related companies.

Li Yuzhong, Deputy Manager of the Project of Imaging and Electronic Control Engineering, R & D Division, Vehicle Research and Test Center

Figure 2 Li Yuzhong, deputy manager of the imaging and electrical control engineering project of the Research and Development Center of the Vehicle Research and Testing Center, pointed out that the vehicle center has cooperated with domestic passenger transport operators to introduce image-based ADAS into the bus to monitor driving conditions.

Li Yuzhong (Picture 2), deputy manager of the imaging and electrical control engineering project of the Research and Testing Center (ARTC) Research and Development Center (ARTC), said that as brand automakers strive to optimize the experience of using image-based ADAS, vehicle lenses will be accelerated towards higher image quality; therefore , Has now attracted many image sensor, module and system developers to develop product deployment, and strive to seize market opportunities.

However, Li Yuzhong emphasized that because the lens of the image-based ADAS must meet the strict requirements of the car regulations, it cannot be quickly upgraded to millions of pixels to capture high-quality images as products used in consumer electronic devices. Therefore, the industry has passed the test at this stage. Automotive lenses only support D1 (720 & TImes; 480) resolution. In order to break through this shackle, the vehicle center worked with partners to develop high-definition lens for vehicles. It is expected that it will bear fruit in the near future and help break through the functional limitations of image-based ADAS.

In conjunction with the development of high-definition lenses for vehicles, more advanced image algorithms must also be developed to enhance the real-time processing capability of image-based ADAS for larger amounts of data. Therefore, the vehicle center has also developed multiple sets of image calculation mechanisms, including a frontal view safety integrated system that integrates two functions of front collision warning and lane deviation warning, as well as blind spot detection and image obstacles developed for the side and rear view Object detection (IOD) and advanced parking guidance (APG), etc.

Li Yuzhong revealed that at present, the vehicle center has transferred 14 algorithm technologies to Taiwan system manufacturers, and provides a complete hardware and software reference design to help the industry quickly enter the automotive after-market (After Market) and the original equipment manufacturers ( OEM) supply chain, and further divide the food-based ADAS business opportunities.
