1. Project Overview

Located in the northern part of Guizhou Plateau, Meitan County is the central city of the eastern part of Zunyi City and the county political, economic and cultural center. The forest coverage rate in the county reached 44.68%, and the city's Lijiang River passed through the city and was a national-level ecological demonstration zone.

Meitan County is rich in high-quality tea, which is a famous "tea town" in China. “Tianhu Tea Culture Park” is a national AAA-level tourist scenic spot. It is the “Top Ten Charming Scenic Spots in Guizhou”. The “First World Pot” Hotel is located at the top of the park. The building area is more than 5,000 square meters, the height of the pot is 73.8 meters, and the maximum diameter of the body. 24 meters, it is currently the world's largest teapot physical building, and is also the landmark building in Zunyi City. The urban population of Meitan County is about 110,000, the city is highly active, and the nighttime crowds have various forms of activities.

Since 2010, the planning and design of the night scene of the old city of the main city of Meitan County has been carried out in two phases. In 2010, the design of the first phase of the Chongqing University Urban Planning and Design Institute was completed, focusing on key buildings and structures such as urban bridges, tea-flavored squares, and county government buildings. In 2011, completed by Chongqing Zhubo Lighting Engineering Design Co., Ltd. The second phase of the design focuses on the “Tianhu Tea Culture Park”, Zhejiang University Plaza and other key buildings.

The first phase of the design focuses on lighting up the city, providing the public with the necessary lighting for nighttime public life, improving the sense of security and happiness of the citizens, and focusing on the lighting design of public buildings, plazas and bridges. The second phase of the design focuses on the lighting design of key nodes including landmark buildings, squares with large traffic flow and superior landscapes, improving the quality of night life of the citizens and forming the night lighting features of Meitan County.

2. Status of lighting carriers

The old town of the main city of Meitan County is dominated by old multi-storey houses, and the facade renovation is about to take place. In addition to the Tianhu Hotel, there is only one high-rise building that has been built. Most of the building carriers have a single style and lack of features; but the "Tianhu Tea Culture Park" has beautiful scenery and many unique antique viewing pavilions. There are several beautiful bridges in the city. The tea-flavored square and the Zhejiang-Zhejiang square have beautiful scenery. It provides a good carrier for the city night scene.

The landmark building Tianhu Hotel has a large volume, and the exterior surface is complicated and twisted. The surface material is crimson imitation purple sand coating, which is difficult to design and construct.

3. Lighting design guiding ideology

The design of night lighting in Meitan County should fully reflect the characteristics of “China Tea City” and “Eco-Tangtan”. Therefore, in the design, the requirements for lighting mode, lighting quality and lighting energy saving are much higher than those of small and medium-sized cities in western China. . In addition, as the central city of the eastern part of Zunyi City, its nightscape construction has a demonstration effect on the surrounding counties. Therefore, from design concept to lighting technology should be quite advanced.

2. Innovations in lighting design concepts and methods:

2.1 Design concept, strategy innovation

The biggest challenge is how to deal with the differences in aesthetic tastes between designers and local residents due to different cultural backgrounds. How to use the logical design method to deal with the local carrier with universal identity, but at the same time it is unconventional / deviating from the "elite aesthetic" is another major difficulty in design.

(1) Conflicts and contradictions of ideas: attitudes towards existing (non-traditional) contemporary folk customs

The huge “first pot of the world” is figurative and exaggerated, and does not seem to meet the professional architects’ evaluation criteria for “architectural beauty”. However, in the hearts of local people, it has a very high status - it is not only the landmark building of the city, the representative of the tea culture, but also the height of "the pride of the city."

(2) Respect and change - tolerance for different values ​​and aesthetic tastes

At the beginning of the project, the local residents' understanding of the night scene still stayed at the stage of “five colors and dynamic flashing”. Party A has questioned the mild and seemingly dull design, fearing that it will not be accepted because it deviates from the aesthetic habits of the local people. Therefore, the designer has adopted the following strategies:

1 Fully understand and respect local culture and accommodate different aesthetic tastes:

Repeated communication, step by step, use innovative ideas and professional technical means to influence and change the public's concept;

2 Design and implement in stages, first “seeking the same” and then “reserving differences”:

The first phase of the design, through the demonstration of the project, allows the public to gradually accept static, elegant yellow and white light; however, when lighting large structures such as bridges, the design brightness is slightly higher, making the public easy to accept (transition);

The second phase of the design boldly reduced the overall design brightness and “left black” in the night scene.

2.2 Design Method Innovation

(1) Determine the illumination node and regional illumination brightness by the trajectory of the crowd, the density rather than the nature of the carrier, and the aesthetic value.

For buildings such as the administrative building of the county government that is far from the center of the city and has few people, although the carrier is relatively good, its brightness level is reduced, and thus the brightness is gradually increased to the center.

(2) Treat the controversial building with the seemingly simplest lighting method, and properly represent it

The lighting of the Tianhu Hotel uses the seemingly most common cast and floodlights to express this huge “zisha pot” in a low-key, peaceful yet delicate way, making it less than abrupt. Under the condition that the installation position of the lamp is strictly restricted, the layered pan/projection illumination is adopted, and the precise control of the light and the specially processed light source show the gentle and subtle light and shadow changes of the “zisha pot”.

In addition, the contradiction between cost input and quality control is well solved. After the project was implemented, it was widely recognized by the public. This is the result of mutual recognition of values ​​and the desired effect of the designer.
